The Write Author

Professional Manuscript Review Services

Human Reader - Human Feedback

You've poured your soul onto the pages, reading, revising, and re-reading until your eyes cross.

Now, it's time for someone else to tell you what truly works—and what needs forging.

At The Write Author, I blend the deep story understanding of an editor with the instinctive reactions of a true reader. I believe great stories need both the critical eye of an editor and the fresh perspective of a beta reader at different stages. That's why I offer three levels of manuscript review, designed to meet your specific needs depending on what stage your manuscript is in.
Looking for a comprehensive review? I have you covered with my bundle package!

Why me?

Because I have been in love with words my entire life.

I was born a wordsmith. I have a B.A. in English, a M.A. in Literature, and I completed the Writing for Children and Teens course from the Writer's Institute of Children's Literature. I have spent over 50 years honing my craft and enjoy mentoring others how to improve theirs.

I promise to give you honest (but loving) feedback. Because your story deserves it.

"Dangerous, but cute. Like a badger with a red pen."

Reader Response Review

Big-Picture Beta Read, with a Professional Edge

You're in the early to mid-draft stage. You want to know if your story works before diving into heavy revisions. You want honesty, encouragement, and clarity—without the overwhelm.

This service gives you:

A detailed assessment covering:

  • Overall Enjoyment: What did I love? What kept me turning the pages?

  • Emotional Impact: Did the key moments evoke the intended feelings?

  • Pacing and Flow: Were there parts that dragged or flew by too quickly?

  • Plot Structure & Coherence: Did the story progress logically, hold my interest, and avoid confusion, plot holes, or unanswered questions?

  • Character Development and Connection: Did I connect with your characters and believe in their motivations and journeys?

Note: While this review focuses on the reader experience and big-picture elements, I'll also flag any significant grammatical/mechanical errors that disrupt the read. This service does not include line-by-line markups or extensive grammar/punctuation correction.

Your investment: $0.005 per word.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your review slot and begin work. The remaining balance will be due upon completion of the review, before the final report is delivered.

Turnaround Time: Typically 2-3 weeks for manuscripts up to 80,000 words. For longer works, a specific timeline will be provided with your booking confirmation.

Start with a sample!

To help you experience the quality of my feedback before committing to a full project, I offer a paid sample assessment.

Sample Fee: $20

What You Get: A reader analysis of 2,500 words of your manuscript, along with a brief written assessment highlighting key reader insights.

You'll receive your sample analysis within 3-5 business days.

Credit Toward Service: This sample fee can be credited towards any of my three Manuscript Review Services if you book within 30 days of receiving the sample feedback.

"I entrusted the manuscript of my newest book to Rebecca for feedback as a beta reader, the last step before publication. She did a great job of proofreading, finding some errors I had missed despite reading it dozens of times. More importantly, she was able to offer observations about the overall structure and organization of the book as well as the emotional impact, letting me see the effect my work might have on readers in the general public. Rebecca's critique helped me to understand what in the story was working—and fix what wasn’t. I was able to go back and see my work through her eyes in making those critical, final edits. I highly recommend Rebecca and The Write Author to anyone seeking editing, proofreading, or general feedback."

This service complements your big-picture revisions by providing comprehensive, line-by-line editing focused on refining your prose. You'll receive a thoroughly marked-up manuscript with commentary, offering actionable suggestions focused on enhancing your story while preserving your unique authorial voice:

  • Rewording, cuts, or tightening for clarity and impact

  • Sentence structure, conciseness, grammar, punctuation, and spelling corrections (English conventions)

  • Notes on pacing within sentences and paragraphs, improving flow between sentences, and enhancing scene transitions at the prose level

  • Identifying opportunities to transform 'telling' into 'showing' through stronger verbs, sensory details, and action

  • Ensuring continuity of details within scenes and addressing inconsistencies in factual elements or worldbuilding as they appear in the text

Your Investment: Red Pen Review Pricing Tiers

Tier 3: Developing Manuscript: $0.020 per word

"To Rebecca E. Schmuck For your unwavering support, keen editorial eye, and relentless pursuit of clarity. You read, reread, edited, re-edited, and hunted down errors with the precision of a literary sleuth. More than that, you helped me become a better writer. This book would not be the same without you."
