Professional Manuscript Review Services

Rebecca E. Schmuck | Your Forensic Story Specialist.

Most editors tell you how a story feels. I find the places where your story fails.

When you’ve lived with a manuscript for months, your brain fills in the gaps. You know what you meant, so you stop seeing what is actually on the page. I don't have that bias. I perform a high-octane stress test on your narrative to ensure it is structurally sound and logically consistent.

"Dangerous, but cute.
Like a badger with a red pen."

Lawrence Pirela

Why me? Because I’ve spent over fifty years investigating the DNA of a good story.

I was born a wordsmith, but my career began as a teenager, completing professional training through the Writer's Institute of Children's Literature—a field where clarity and pacing are the ultimate survival skills. I followed that with an accelerated academic path, earning my M.A. in Literature by age 21. My entire life has been a lifelong devotion to how narrative actually works—and why it fails.

Whether I’m doing a deep-dive audit or a Last Look Beta Read, I provide the insight others miss. Combining the academic eye of a scholar with the training of a licensed Private Investigator, I hunt for the hidden fractures: the timeline drifts, the "impossible" physics, and the "hollow" dialogue that break your reader’s trust.

I don’t see a manuscript as a series of separate tasks. My brain doesn't work that way. I provide an Integrated Pass because a story is a seamless world—I can’t look at a narrative inconsistency or a surface-level error without seeing it as a breach in your authority. If it disrupts the reader's experience, I find it and I flag it.

My goal is to protect the integrity of your world while preserving your unique authorial voice. You’ve poured your soul into these pages—I’m here to make sure the evidence on the page supports the vision in your head.

The Human Guarantee: 0% AI | 100% Me

Your story is a human endeavor; it deserves a human eye. I do not use AI tools, LLMs, or automated "style-checkers" to audit your work. Every fracture identified and every suggestion made is the result of fifty years of narrative study and my own professional intuition. When you book any of my services, you are hiring my brain—not an algorithm.

The Forensic Narrative Audit

The Integrated Edit for Serious Authors

One Comprehensive Pass. Complete Manuscript Integrity.

The traditional editing world divides your book into "phases"—Developmental, Line, and Copy editing. They ask you to pay for the same manuscript repeatedly and wait months for a result that often feels fragmented.

I don’t work in phases. I perform a Forensic Narrative Audit: a high-intensity, integrated pass that tackles the soul and the syntax of your story at the same time.

What I provide:

Structural Integrity (The Logic & Physics)

I identify the Structural Paradoxes that break a reader’s immersion. I hunt for the common "blind spots" that authors overlook: timeline drifts, characters acting on information they haven't learned yet, or physical movements that defy the setting. If the internal logic of your world has a leak, I flag it and provide the fix to restore the foundation.

The Reader’s Pulse (Engagement & Voice)

I diagnose the "Friction Points" where the story loses its grip on the reader. This includes flagging Perfomative Prose—passages that sound profound but lack logical substance—and pinpointing where the Narrative Voice or emotional stakes have gone flat. I provide actionable suggestions to tighten the pacing and ensure your writing serves the story, rather than distracting from it.

The Mechanical Finish (The Red Pen)

I don’t ignore the commas while auditing the soul of the story. I bring an academic-grade eye to the mechanics, correcting punctuation, grammar, and typos as I go. You receive a professional, polished manuscript that is ready for the next stage without the need for additional rounds of basic cleanup.

Your investment: $0.015 per word.
Minimum engagement: $100

Includes: Detailed Inline Comments and a Structural Audit Report, plus a one-time follow-up for your specific questions. This can be by handled by email, a 20-minute Zoom/Voice consult, or through Inline Comment replies.

Deposit: A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your slot. The remaining balance is due upon completion, prior to final delivery.

Turnaround: Typically 3–5 weeks for manuscripts up to 80,000 words. (Custom timelines provided for longer works.)

What you Get: A written assessment of my Professional Reader experience.

"I entrusted the manuscript of my newest book to Rebecca for feedback as a beta reader, the last step before publication. She did a great job of proofreading, finding some errors I had missed despite reading it dozens of times. More importantly, she was able to offer observations about the overall structure and organization of the book as well as the emotional impact, letting me see the effect my work might have on readers in the general public. Rebecca's critique helped me to understand what in the story was working—and fix what wasn’t. I was able to go back and see my work through her eyes in making those critical, final edits. I highly recommend Rebecca and The Write Author to anyone seeking editing, proofreading, or general feedback."
