Rebecca E. Schmuck | Your Forensic Story Specialist.

"Dangerous, but cute.
Like a badger with a red pen."
— Lawrence Pirela
Why me? Because I’ve spent over fifty years investigating the DNA of a good story.
I was born a wordsmith, but my career began as a teenager, completing professional training through the Writer's Institute of Children's Literature—a field where clarity and pacing are the ultimate survival skills. I followed that with an accelerated academic path, earning my M.A. in Literature by age 21. My entire life has been a lifelong devotion to how narrative actually works—and why it fails.
Whether I’m doing a deep-dive audit or a Last Look Beta Read, I provide the insight others miss. Combining the academic eye of a scholar with the training of a licensed Private Investigator, I hunt for the hidden fractures: the timeline drifts, the "impossible" physics, and the "hollow" dialogue that break your reader’s trust.
I don’t see a manuscript as a series of separate tasks. My brain doesn't work that way. I provide an Integrated Pass because a story is a seamless world—I can’t look at a narrative inconsistency or a surface-level error without seeing it as a breach in your authority. If it disrupts the reader's experience, I find it and I flag it.
My goal is to protect the integrity of your world while preserving your unique authorial voice. You’ve poured your soul into these pages—I’m here to make sure the evidence on the page supports the vision in your head.

What you Get: A written assessment of my Professional Reader experience.
"I entrusted the manuscript of my newest book to Rebecca for feedback as a beta reader, the last step before publication. She did a great job of proofreading, finding some errors I had missed despite reading it dozens of times. More importantly, she was able to offer observations about the overall structure and organization of the book as well as the emotional impact, letting me see the effect my work might have on readers in the general public. Rebecca's critique helped me to understand what in the story was working—and fix what wasn’t. I was able to go back and see my work through her eyes in making those critical, final edits. I highly recommend Rebecca and The Write Author to anyone seeking editing, proofreading, or general feedback."
